"Washington and his troops" carried the torch from Pennsylvania, across the Delaware River to Trenton.
Many notable atheletes, former Olympians, community leaders, politicians, and heros and survivors of 9/11 carried the torch along the way. The 1980 Olympic Gold Medal Men's Ice Hockey Team lite the Olympic cauldron.
The torch relay is sponsored by Coka Cola visit their flash site~it's neat!
The US Flag recovered from the 9/11 disaster site was solemnly carried into the stadium during opening ceremonies. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sang the National Anthem.
Jim Shea,Jr.,took the Olympic oath on behalf of the atheletes as did his grandfather 70 years ago
The first Gold medal was awarded to 15-kilometer freestyle cross-country racer, Stefania Belmondo of Italy.
The first medal awarded to an American athelete was Silver, won by Shannon Bahrke, women's freestyle moguls.
The first Gold medal to an American athelete was won by Kelly Clark, women's halfpipe.

  • ~my personal comments~
This page is a tribute to the atheletes of my country,America, but atheletes of other countries catch your eye or imagination....
  • Figure Skating
  • Jamie Sale & David Pelletier , Canadas pair...on any given day the Russian team, (Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze) and this team both skate beautifully and when it comes down to it, it's a matter of preference, which of course is subjective. On this day it WAS the Canadian team with the better skate but as "everyone" knows the gold was awarded to the Russians. In an extraordinary turn of events it was discovered that a judge from France had "thrown" her vote-it was nulified, and the Canadians were also presented with a Gold Medal....only fair!
  • Alexei Yagudin,Russia ...my personal favorite, got his GOLD by putting together a beautiful short and long!
  • Canada's Dance pair,Shae-Lynn Bourne & Victor Kraatz have the disadvantage of no support on the panel. They are my favorite. This is particularly difficult to judge the difference in the programs that are presented but they are forever Gold to me.
  • What can you say! The sentimental favorite did not skate her best, which opened up the door for one of my favs-Irena Slutskya of Russia, who also did not skate her best so...Sarah Huges skated the best program "I" have evr seen!!! Sarah trains here in New Jersey. After the short program NO ONE was talking about her at all, nevertheless she went out there and showed "em what she was made of! Just incredible!
  • Skiing
  • Chris Klug, first organ transplant recipient to compete (and win!)
  • Switzerland's Surprise....Simon Ammann, 20 year old Harry Potter, look-a-like well exceeded expectations on the slopes! It was a joy to watch his joy and his yell!
  • Bode Miller, the reckless comeback kid! First man to win this event! Conquer the mountain dude!
  • Speed Skating
  • Apolo Anton Ohno's first race....oh my! This sport is a real nailbiter! Almost there and taken out by the guys behind him and injured to boot! At least he was close enough to crawl over the finish line for the Silver! The only one still on his feet, Australia's Steven Bradbury, takes the gold! He was a very gracious winner with no delusions but said,"Hey I'll take it!" The first Winter Olympics Gold medal for an Australian!(and they won a second on the slopes!) Apolo was particulary gracious throughout the event.
  • Derek Para, first Mexican American to win gold!
  • Chris Witty skates to gold and sets a new world record in spite of mono!
  • Bobsled
  • Ladies Bobsled first time event-America's Sled (2) wins gold! Team member Vonetta Flowers is the first African American to win Gold! Bravo!
  • Men's Bobsled-both teams win first medals ( Silver & Bronze) in 46 years.Randy Jones and Garrett Hines are the first African American men to ever medal in the Winter Olympics!Bravo!
  • Skeleton
  • first third generation Olympian,Jimmy Shea!Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Shea,we're callin' Jimmy!
  • Ice Hockey
  • To the dismay of our ladies Canada took Gold in a hard fought game...Congrats to Canada for their first Gold in hockey in about 50 years! Double GOLD to Canada! To the dismay of our men Canada took Gold in another a hard fought game...Congrats to Canada for their second Gold in hockey. Both Men's teams were comprised of NHL stars/favs. Canada's goalie is "our" NJ Devils goalie!
  • Curling
  • Real interesting and intense sport! Scotland, under the British flag won the Gold. First Gold medal for Britain since Torville and Dean back in 1984!
  • Total
  • Winter Olympics record medal count-twice as many as our last best(13), 34 total!
  • Final Thoughts
  • The games were great! There were many new records set and heart warming stories of sacrifice and dedication. Unfortunately the last day of the games it was announced that a few atheletes were found to have used performance enhancing drugs. Both the opening and closing ceremonies were spectacular with artists from around the world participating. Even Utah's own Donnie and Marie became a pair of dinosaurs overlooking the stadium! Thanks to all the atheletes for giving "us" all the exciting moments! It was over all too soon! I can't wait for the Summer Olympics in  Athens 2004 and Winter Olympics in  Torino 2006!
